Top 5 Ways to Ring in the New Year in Key West

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

When it comes to bringing in the New Year, Key West has a celebratory choice for everyone. Here are my TOP 5 selections for welcoming 2012.

5 – Key West Dachshund Walk – For the 7th year, about 200 dachshunds and their owners parade down Fleming Street (between Whitehead and Duval Streets) for a family-friendly New Year spectacle. This takes place at noon the day of New Year’s Eve and is a locals’ favorite.

susiecoment4 – Karaoke with Susie Comet – Before you head downtown for one of the three festive “drops,” start the evening by warming up that countdown voice. Pearl’s Patio will be rocking with karaoke led by Susie Comet and our 12 Days of Christmas special drink of the day.

3 – Conch Shell Drop – The Sloppy Joe’s crowd will definitely enjoy the Conch shell drop from the top of their favorite bar at 201 Duval Street.

2 – Wench Drop – If you’re feeling the pirate spirit, head to the Historic Seaport, near Shcooner Wharf Bar, where a wench is dropped from a tall ship mast.

PearlsFun_Events_Sushi_Left1 – Drag Queen Drop – For those seeking a little gaiety in their New Year celebration, Bourbon Street Pub at 724 Duval Street is the place to see and be seen. Porsche of Wanda Sykes Show fame hosts an evening of live performances, culminating in the drop of local drag queen Sushi atop a 6-ft red high heel shoe.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Live Music at Pearl’s Patio Tops This Week’s Key West Top 5

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Even when it is supposed to be the slow season in Key West, we are never at a loss for festivals and events. Below are my top five for the upcoming week.

5 - Key West Musicians Festival – 19 notable Key West musicians come together for an afternoon of musical entertainment at the Smokin’ Tuna Saloon Saturday, noon-4 PM. Best of all, 20% of the proceeds go to local non-profit Sister Season Fund, Inc.

4 - Bear Fest Key West 2011 – Thursday through Sunday, Key West welcomes all of the bears to the island. Pool and dance parties are planned all weekend for those who like to let the fur fly.

3 - Fantasy Fest King & Queen Candidate Events – The race is still on for the next Fantasy Fest King and Queen. This week’s events include a spelling bee, a progressive dinner, tastings, and a comedy show. Not to be missed is the classical music concert at St. Peter’s Church Friday at 8 PM.

2 - Wig Auction - I am so excited about this candidate event, I had to give it its own place in the line-up. Local salon Headlines sponsors this fun auction of fabulously- and professionally-designed wigs of all shapes, themes and colors. The auction takes place Wednesday at Aqua Nightclub starting at 6 PM.

B_n_S_20101 - Black and Skabuddah at the Patio – Originally from NYC, Black and Skabuddah make their first appearance at Pearl’s Patio this Saturday, 7-10 PM. Black and Skabuddah’s sound has been described as acoustic-driven classic rock with an edge. Their repertoire consists of 60’s & 70’s classic rock and some of their original music. We look forward to welcoming them to the Patio.

See you in paradise soon!

Counting Down to Labor Day in Key West

Monday, August 29th, 2011

This week is all about the anticipation of the upcoming three-day weekend. It’s almost Labor Day in Key West, and here are my top 5 through the holiday.

5 - Azur End of Summer Party – A favorite restaurant for the locals, Azur celebrates the end of summer Sunday, September 4th, 6-9 PM, with a sampling of Chef Michael’s favorites for $10, and wine for $5 a glass.

BillyandBob4 - Chief Billy & Bob Paul Live at the Patio – Two members of the local band The Vaporizers, Chief Billy & Bob Paul play live at the Patio Friday evening, September 2nd, 7-9 PM. As Bob Paul says, “Stop by for some cold brews and some hot blues!”

3 - Mr & Miss Sister Season Pageant - This fun and campy pageant on Labor Day, 6:30-11 PM, benefits the Sister Season Fund, which helps locals in the hospitality industry with expenses in times of need.

2 - Fantasy Fest King & Queen Candidate Events – A new crop of candidates are off and running on their campaign for King or Queen of Fantasy Fest, all the while raising money for local non-profit AIDSHelp. The events will be endless up until the coronation, which kicks off Fantasy Fest in October. This week includes an orchid auction, a happy hour with Key Lime Pie, and a goat cheese and wine tasting.

1 - Key West Brewfest – Only in its second year, Brewfest has become popular with locals and visitors alike. Happening September 1-5, the highlight is a Brewfest Tasting Festival on Saturday on Key West’s South Beach. Taste over 100 different beers on the beach! All proceeds benefit the Key West Sunrise Rotary Club and their charitable efforts.

See you in paradise soon!
