Top 5 Ways to Ring in the New Year in Key West

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

When it comes to bringing in the New Year, Key West has a celebratory choice for everyone. Here are my TOP 5 selections for welcoming 2012.

5 – Key West Dachshund Walk – For the 7th year, about 200 dachshunds and their owners parade down Fleming Street (between Whitehead and Duval Streets) for a family-friendly New Year spectacle. This takes place at noon the day of New Year’s Eve and is a locals’ favorite.

susiecoment4 – Karaoke with Susie Comet – Before you head downtown for one of the three festive “drops,” start the evening by warming up that countdown voice. Pearl’s Patio will be rocking with karaoke led by Susie Comet and our 12 Days of Christmas special drink of the day.

3 – Conch Shell Drop – The Sloppy Joe’s crowd will definitely enjoy the Conch shell drop from the top of their favorite bar at 201 Duval Street.

2 – Wench Drop – If you’re feeling the pirate spirit, head to the Historic Seaport, near Shcooner Wharf Bar, where a wench is dropped from a tall ship mast.

PearlsFun_Events_Sushi_Left1 – Drag Queen Drop – For those seeking a little gaiety in their New Year celebration, Bourbon Street Pub at 724 Duval Street is the place to see and be seen. Porsche of Wanda Sykes Show fame hosts an evening of live performances, culminating in the drop of local drag queen Sushi atop a 6-ft red high heel shoe.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Unique Dining in Key West This Week

Friday, November 18th, 2011

As we look forward to Thanksgiving week, we begin to focus on one of our favorite holiday pastimes – dining.  This week I highlight 5 Key West choices for dining out of the norm. Bon appetite!

5 – The Waterfront Playhouse Evening of Duets – The dining delights start tonight at 8 PM, when over a dozen of the theater’s stars present a concert of duets, followed by a post-performance party catered by local chef Jennifer Cornell.

spaghetti-sm4 – Pearl’s Spaghetti Dinner – You won’t want to miss Chef Toni’s $2 Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, 4:30-7:30 PM.  We will celebrate everyone who participated in SMART Ride 8 while noshing on spaghetti, meatballs, salad and bread.

3 – Fury’s Turkey on the Water – If you want a different kind of Thanksgiving Day this year, Fury Water Adventures is hosting a special Thanksgiving cruise 10 AM – 4 PM. In addition to the usual water sports, this cruise includes a thanksgiving-themed breakfast and lunch.

2 – Turkey Turnabout at Bourbon St. Pub - This evening of fun benefits local charity The Sister Season Fund. It begins with a Thanksgiving buffet at 5 PM, then bartenders and staff put on their best drag performances starting at 10 PM.

1 – Pearl’s Thanksgiving Pot Luck – If that family holiday atmosphere is what you’re looking for, look no further than the Strand at Pearl’s on Thanksgiving Day. Pearl’s will provide the turkey; you bring your favorite side dish. Enjoy the company of old friends and make a few new ones. Call the Pearl’s office at 305-292-1450 to sign up.

gaytrolleyI finally had a chance to take the Gay Key West Trolley Tour last week, and it was a fun and unique experience.

Hosted by the Key West Business Guild, this trolley tour with a gay twist winds its way through Old Town, unveiling the history of Key West’s famous and infamous, including the many gay characters that have called the island home.

This special tour is offered for $25/person every Saturday at 11:00 AM. Let the Pearl’s Crew make the arrangements for you.
